The old “Grill on the Hill” on the campus of Dorothea Dix Hospital will be reopening in the next month or two once its interior is prepared and furnished, kitchen equipment is installed, and a temporary operator is in place.
Eddie Weaver, director of the Division of Services for the Blind, said the grill will be operated through DSB’s Business Enterprise Program. The program offers self-employment opportunities for the visually impaired. Authorized under the Randall-Sheppard Act of 1936, BPE facilities operate mostly in federal and state buildings, county courthouse and welcome centers.
The grill will open under a contract with a retired operator who will staff and run the business for a few months to help determine viability and business volume. Later a full-time operator will be competitively chosen.
The grill is at the back of the McBryde Building on the Dix Campus, with an outdoor entrance facing west onto Cafeteria Drive. Hours of operation will be Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
