Drawing by son of DHHS employee tops safety calendar

Workplace safety is the theme of the 2015 calendar available through Correction Enterprises following a contest last summer sponsored by the Office of State Human Resources.

The central character to the promotional campaign is Hazard Hero, who sports a red mask and cape with an ‘H’ on his chest and hands on his hips. He looks ready to tackle the most challenging hazard to make jobs safer for state employees. The campaign is also promoted by a calendar featuring Hazard Hero on the cover and a different drawing for each month by the children of state employees. Their work was judged last summer.

Da’Sean Clark’s four panel drawing encourages safe practices and the shows the dangers of unsafe practices. His drawing is the January image on the 2015 North Carolina State Employees Safety Calendar.  He earned a blue ribbon in his age group in the Hazard Recognition and Awareness poster contest for children of state employees.

Da’Sean is a senior at South Central High School in Winterville. He is the son of Latina Shelly, an employee at the Walter B. Jones Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center in Greenville.

The calendar and the Hazard Hero are part of Gov. Pat McCrory’s efforts to reduce the exposure of state employees to risks of injury and to reduce the expense of on-the-job injury claims. A form for reporting a hazard is available by clicking here.

The state Office of Human Resources offers a definition for a Hazard Hero: an employee who, in the face of danger and/or when observing a hazard, displays courage and the will to self-sacrifice their time by taking action to remove or protect against the hazard by reporting their findings to their supervisor.

The program was created by the Statewide Safety and Health Steering Committee and is endorsed by the Governor’s Health and Safety Leadership Team.
